Identifying Local Opportunities

1.     Rays stadium debate used to be contentious. Now, it’s just stupid.

In Tampa, Major League Baseball team The Rays have been going back and forth with the City Council about the construction of a new stadium. Trenches have been dug all around the stadium, but there are negotiations that the team might actually just move to Canada. However, residents around the stadium are not being informed about what is going on.

The Problem: There is not a way of communication between all three parties within Tampa. The team, the City Council, and the residents of St. Petersburg is all on different loops.

Who has the problem: Those residents with businesses around the stadium are having their roads and buildings broken up because they are anticipating a new stadium. However, this only hurts their businesses and day to day life. Consumers are losing small markets, stores, etc. because of everything being torn down to build a new stadium.

2.     After abrupt Lucky’s Market exit, what happens to its Tampa Bay stores?

Many Lucky’s Markets in the Tampa Bay area are being closed down or construction is being halted. There was a total of 32 stores closing and an additional 19 that were expected to be built have ceased construction

The Problem: Many neighborhoods that were expected to have grocery stores are now going without. It forces people to travel further for groceries. Also, money is being lost.

Who has the problem: Tampa Bay area residents are suffering because the need for more accessible grocery stores is still there. Also, the investors in the stores are the ones losing money.

3.     Stores were built on Zion Cemetery and blacks shopped there. Fear is why.

In the 1920s/1930s, there was an African-American cemetery that had a meat shop built on top of it. Today, the building has transformed over time into various different markets. However, it has now closed down and the building is sitting on top of graves.

The Problem: Peoples graves are under the store, so their bodies would have to be relocated. Also, the market has closed down so there are families who have lost their business while others do not have a convenient place to shop.

Who has the problem: The owners are without a business, the families who have family members buried under the store have to deal with relocating family members. Also, neighborhood residents who used the market suffer from not having a local grocery store.

4.     Traffic on Hillsborough Avenue in Tampa already is congested. Why does it seem even worse now?

There are numerous complaints about the cities plan and execution for the construction of new drainage lines. Two of the most populated streets have been broken up and force residents to take detours home.

The Problem: The two streets are being constructed at the same time. The flow of traffic has been reduced from three lanes to as little as one lane in some areas. City traffic has gone up tremendously in these areas of construction.

Who has the problem: City officials have a problem because they are catching the backlash. The residents of the city experience the most difficulties because, in a large city, their long commute has been made even longer.

5.     Tampa’s popular Downtowner rides could end soon unless someone pays for them

In downtown Tampa, there is a service that is similar to Uber and Lyft, but it is free. The service provides free rides to people in the downtown area, but the funds for the service are running out and there needs to be a plan to fund the service before it goes away.

The Problem: The Department of Transportation does not have a plan to continue the service or an idea of where the funding would come from. If the service is not free anymore, then people will have to find other ways to get around.

Who has the problem: Downtown workers and tourist have a problem.

  1. I really enjoyed that way your post was organized, it made it very easy to understand and read. You did a great job on pinpointing the problem in each of your articles and made it very clear who the problem was affecting the most. Your summaries were also very helpful because they were very accurate and helped explain the articles even further.

  2. Hi Xavier, thank you for your post. I like that you focused on another region in Florida. You did a very thorough job defining the issue, as well as who is facing this issue. Although I live close to this area, I'm surprised to hear about some of the issues being reported. I think you accurately completed this assignment and did a great job selecting news.
