Reading Reflection No. 3

Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Carol Dweck

1.      What was the general theme of the book?
The general theme is to have a mindset that is fixed and also keeping an open mind to fulfill one’s potential in life.

2.      How did the book in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT3003?
There was a part in the book that focused on corrective criticism and how people respond to the failure that occurs is crucial. Even in the class, we discuss learning from our failures for growth. So, this book reinforces what we are already being taught.

3.      If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?
I would have students lay out a short-term goal and a long-term goal. Typically, long term goals are more difficult and aligns with an individual’s calling, and short-term goals can be more widespread. I am going to ask them to come up with ideas that will connect the goals together. This will enforce that rewiring of the brain to make everything have purpose.

4.      What was your biggest surprise or ‘aha’ moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?
When reading the definition and the explanation of Dweck’s difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset, the light bulb went off in my head. I was able to get an idea on how powerful our mind is and how much thinking can impact our success.

  1. Hey Xavier, this book seems very interesting and I appreciate the elaborate description you gave of it. I really liked the idea you had for the exercise in class because that'll really help students write out their goals, making them more tangible in a sense. It's important to always be working towards a certain goal or objective as that is what truly motivates an individual leading them to eventually reaching their full potential. Great job here!
